Today's Windows Update  Breaks the Calendar Gadget on Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit.  Does not break it on Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit.
I ran windows update on two Win 7 Ultimate machines today. On my 64 bit version, today's update broke the calendar gadget. On the 32 bit version it did not. How can I get the calander gadget to work again on my 64 bit version?

Update! The patch only breaks the active user profile. If a new user account is crated on the 64 bit version, calendar will work on that new profle.

It turns out that the update clobbered the calander gadget entries in the settings.ini file in windows sidebar under microsoft, under local, under appdata, under the user profile that was up when the update ran. Any one have a clue? The good news is all can be made well through a tedious process.

Hi, Could you help me narrow down which update cause the issue? Go to Windows Update and view the update history. After knowing the update name or KB number, I will make further research or submit the feedback to the appropriate team through our internal channel. If the issue is caused by settings.ini, I suggest you create a new user account and then move the original user profiles to the new one, then use the new account instead. Niki, There were 6 updates installed by windows update on 5/11/2011 that may have caused the problem. KB2540162, KB2536413, KB2535818, KB890830, KB2534366, and KB2509470. After these updates, the calendar gadget was blank, no letters or numbers. An examination of the settings.ini file showed the following settings in the file were missing. PrivateSetting_GadgetName="C:%5CProgram%20Files%5CWindows%20Sidebar%5CGadgets%5CCalendar.Gadget" dockedCalendarView="DAY_DOCKED" dockedCalendarDivType="dow" unDockedCalendarView="MONTH_UNDOCKED" PrivateSetting_GadgetDropLocationX="1521" PrivateSetting_GadgetDropLocationY="94" PrivateSetting_GadgetSize="large" PrivateSetting_GadgetTopmost="false" This section of the settings.ini was simply gone. I did a system restore to just before the 5/11/2011 update and the calander gadget returned and worked properly. I went to the sidebar settings.ini file and made a copy. I then re ran windows update. Again the calendar gadget was blank. I went to sidebar settings.ini, and compared the file to my prevous copy that worked. They did not match, the entries above were missing. I Killed the sidebar process. Deleted all the calendar gadget entries in sidebar settings.ini and rebooted. After the reboot, I added the calendar gadget back in. Now the sidebar settings.ini had all the proper entries and the calendar gadget worked. Hope this helps. Charles

Hi Charles, Thanks for sharing the solution on this issue. Your efforts and time are highly appreciated. Based on my research, KB2540162, KB2536413, KB2535818 and KB2509470 are Office 2007 updates. Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830). I installed and run it. It is not the cause of the issue. KB2534366 is an hotfix for "0xC0000009A" error message when you try to install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. I have installed it for testing and my Calendar Gadget doesn't corrupt. I suspect the issue could be related to those Office updates. I will confirm with Office Forum and report the issue through our internal channel. Thanks again. Hi guys, Had the same problem with the calendar and still failed to work after a number of solutions. Even downloaded the "dark" calender but it appears to affect all calendars found this while trying to find an answer to the problem and it worked !! <quote>Solution: 1. Ensure ‘sidebar.exe’ is closed ( via the task manager ). 2. Open windows explorer and enter ‘%localappdata%\microsoft\Windows Sidebar’ in the url bar. 3. Rename the ‘Settings.ini’ file to make room for automatic creation of new file. 4. Re-launch sidebar and viola !!</quote> source: http://ibnaziz.wordpress.com/2011/05/22/windows-desktop-gadgets-has-stopped-working-windows-7-x64/

Running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, w/Microsoft Office 2007 Same thing, Right Click Desktop > Gadgets > Click on Calendar > Delete Enter Task Manager > end sidebar.exe process Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On/off > Unselect Gadgets Will prompt to restart, do so. After restarting, Open Control Panel > Programs > Desktop Gadgets> Restore Desktop Gadgets installed on Windows This solved my problem, hope it does the same for you.
